From tom.shanks@durham.ac.uk Tue Aug 20 15:03:58 2002 Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2002 22:11:26 +0100 (BST) From: Tom Shanks To: sisco -- Andrew Lawrence , Gianni Busarello , John Peacock , Joseph Silk , Klaus Meisenheimer , Konrad Kuijken , Luiz DaCosta , Massimo Capaccioli , Steve Rawlings Cc: Nigel Metcalfe , Phil Outram , Carlos Frenk , Olivier Le Fevre , Jim Emerson , Stephen Warren , Brian Boyle Subject: SISCO Kick-Off meeting 1-2/10/02 Dear SISCO Colleague, First, the SISCO contract signed by us all has been sent to EU and I expect them to sign soon. We are therefore now in business. Most nodes have now made informal offers to their postdocs and those that I know about are listed below. PDRA PhD Student Durham Peter Weilbacher (Gottingen, Germany) Jose Cruz da Angela (Oporto, Portugal) Edinburgh Stephanie Phleps (Heidelberg, Germany) ? Groningen Philippe Heraudeau (France) ? - MPIA ?? - OAC Chris Haines (UK) - Oxford - Eugenio Barrio (Spain) ? Please let me know if there are any changes to this list. Below you will find a proposed draft programme for the SISCO Kick-Off Meeting at Durham on 1-2 October. The aim is to have an interesting science meeting and also to determine possible joint SISCO programmes. We are envisaging approximately 4 people attending from each node. You will be housed in small hotels and Bed and Breakfast places around Durham. This is because the university colleges are too crowded at the beginning of term. The rate for Bed and Breakfast will range between 60-90 Euros per night. I now need you to send me urgently confirmations of the names of those who will be attending from your node and for how long they are staying. The default is to arrive on Monday 30th September and leave on morning of Thursday 3rd October. Email me your accommodation details in the following form: Durham Bed and Breakfast accommodation requested for nights of: 30/9 1/10 2/10 T. Shanks x x x N. Metcalfe x x C.S. Frenk x x x P.J. Outram x x Durham will provide a light lunch and morning and afternoon coffee/tea on 1,2 October. All other travel and subsistence expenses that you incur should be charged to your own node's SISCO networking funds. Note that the cut-price airline Go flies to Stansted Airport near London from many Continental airports and Go also flies between Stansted and Newcastle Airport. Go can be found at www.go-fly.com If you arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick you can also fly to Newcastle Airport. Other airlines such as Sabena (or its replacement), KLM and BA are amongst those who fly direct to Newcastle from Schipol, Brussels etc. Newcastle Airport-Durham is a half hour taxi ride which costs 25-30 pounds. I shall try to put a link to more Durham travel details plus map on the SISCO website as soon as possible. Please email me the above details by Wednesday, 14th August. As you will see, Jim Emerson (VISTA), Steve Warren (UKIRT WFCAM), Brian Boyle (2dF) and Olivier Le Fevre (VIMOS) have all accepted invitations to give talks on their instruments/surveys at the Kick-Off meeting. Please send me any comments you have on the meeting programme. The timings below are only a guide - the aim is to have as informal a meeting as possible with plenty of time for discussion. On Tuesday, I have put the obvious names beside each node's current science talk but feel free to re-distribute these. Also the idea is to hear your most interesting new science results and activities rather than cover everything that you do. On Wednesday I leave it up to you as to who you want to present your ideas for SISCO joint programmes. I am hoping all the SISCO young researchers will attend and on Wednesday I hope each of the PDRAs (and perhaps the PhD students?) will give a 5 minute talk to introduce themselves. I have also left time on Wed afternoon for "Working Group Discussions". I dont know if working groups are a good idea - but I am sure that time set aside for sub-groups to discuss their common interests will be useful. On Wednesday afternoon we shall also try to summarise the suggestions for joint programmes that have arisen during the meeting. We also have to look at our future programme and decide on the venue for the next network meeting which I hope will take place either in the Spring or Summer of 2003 at another node. Another possibility is to have a "Surveys Summer School" run by the young researchers themselves. I will be pleased to hear comments and suggestions on any of the above.
